Yes, it's maintenance.
The answer people don't want to hear because it requires work. But let's walk through it real quick from a Chinese medicine POV.
Your body’s repair mechanism becomes less efficient and effective as you age, making you more susceptible to illness and disease. In Chinese medicine, we understand this decrease in the body's natural repair ability to be due to the idea that:
Blood quality and blood flow both decrease with age.
In addition to the inevitability of aging, other factors further impact circulation negatively leading to faster aging. These include:
Trauma
Fresh/old injuries
Diseases
Poor lifestyle choices
Genetics (Constitution as we like to call it in Chinese medicine. A future post.)
Constants beyond our control: gravity, time, aging.
Choices within our control: habits, daily choices, self-care.
We can most certainly slow down the process of aging with the daily choices that we can control. These are your habits + self care.
Through good habits (diet, lifestyle, positive emotions, etc.) and self-care (exercise, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, massage, baths) you can optimize your body's resources and circulation to prevent disease and slow down aging.
Aging is directly correlated to health. The overall health of your body determines how fast or slow you age.
Health in Chinese medicine is ultimately good circulation and optimal use of internal resources.
It's about building good habits and spending a little on your body often to maintain health.
